Samwise Gamgee is a hobbit from Hobbiton in the Shire. He is the son of Hamfast Gamgee and Bell Goodchild, and Bilbo and Frodo's trusted friend and gardner.
When Frodo inherits the Ring from Bilbo, and Galdalf is telling him that this is the One Ring and that he has to leave Bag End, Sam is outside the window eavesdropping. He did not mean to though, he just heard the word elfs and Sam loves the elfs. When he understands Frodo is leaving he gasps and Gandalf hears him. Since Sam already knows way too much, Gandalf decides that Sam is to go with Frodo as a sort of punishment. For Sam though, it can hardly be called punishment, and as the story evolves bringing Sam turns out to be a very smart move.
When the Quest of the Ring is over, Sam goes back to Hobbiton with Frodo, Merry and Pippin. He helps rebuild the Shire after Saruman has had it totally destroyed. The lady Galadriel gave Sam a little wooden box, and inside it Sam finds some fine dust. With this he replants all the trees and flowers in Hobbiton and the rest of the Shire. When spring comes the next year, everything is back to normal.
Sam also marries Rosie Cotton, and they have 14 children; Elanor, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin, Tom and Lilly. Goldilocks later marries Pippin's son Faramir I.
When Frodo leaves for the Gray Havens, he leaves Bag End and all that comes with it to Sam. After Rosie dies, Sam leaves Hobbiton and it is said that he too sailed across the ocean as one of the Ring-bearers. Before this he had been elected mayor of Hobbiton 7 times!
